Exploring faculty’s using behaviors in LMS platform to improve training programs

Because of the benefits of e-learning, learning management systems (LMS) have been adopted in higher education all over the world. It has made instructor teaching activities and student learning processes more flexible and portable by offering a web-based environment without limitations in time or distance (Epping, 2010). LMSs allow users to discuss learning content with the discussion board, retain their learning tracks, and manage their learning activities (Falvo & Johnson, 2007). However, nowadays, higher education and training organizations face the challenge of training and assisting instructors or faculty members to adopt and use a new LMS platform in their classes. Although most educational institutions provide training programs for their faculty, instructors can be reluctant to adopt a new LMS platform. Therefore, in this study, we utilized log data and database queries to explore how faculty utilized the LMS. Based on the results, this study proposes initial recommendations to help understand what major functions we need to consider in designing customized training programs so that barriers adapting new LMS platforms can be mitigated.
