Abstract

Applying principles of significant learning to project rubrics in literature and writing courses improves learning outcomes and engenders authentic interest on the part of the student. This brief paper outlines a method that combines rigor with relevance, which can be adapted to any subject in the liberal arts curriculum. The method is illustrated with specific scenarios in literature, technical communication, and critical thinking to suggest the range of applicability. Based on assessment feedback, it is clear that such a constructivist approach engages the student’s mind, fosters a sense of initiative, and creates additional impetus through teamwork and lively presentations.
