Abstract

This study examined the role of an online community of English teachers English Companion Ning (ECN) in facilitating learning and sharing of knowledge in a collaborative environment, its contribution in professional development of English teachers, and the factors which motivate and demotivate participation in this Ning. It was an online ethnography in which the researcher observed the activities of English teachers in ECN for four months. The author gathered data by analyzing more than 100 postings and interviewing three English teachers. The findings indicated that sharing new knowledge and creative ideas in a collaborative environment, seeking advices from experienced teachers, and getting innovative and real-life tips and strategies for improving pedagogical skills, were the factors that motivated teachers to participate in this community which helped them in honing their personal and professional skills.
