Abstract

Servant Leadership is a philosophy which puts the needs of others before the needs of self and focuses on helping people develop and perform as highly as possible. These principles can have a wide range of influence when applied to the classroom, including increased student satisfaction and learning. This paper applies the servant leadership philosophy to the online classroom with the intent of enhancing the student experience. Brigham Young University—Idaho (BYU-I), a private university in the northwestern United States, has endeavored to build online courses and train remote instructors consistent with principles of servant leadership as they work to better achieve the university’s mission, goals, and purpose.
