Abstract

Web-based Learning using the Internet has recently become popular in engineering education. Yet, there are very few Internet-based systems that seem to promote learners' creativity in machining/manufacturing, engineering experimentation or development. The authors developed a novel Web-based remote design laboratory involving the rotor of a variable reluctance stepping motor. The remote learner designs the rotor, which is then machined by a modeling machine in the laboratory. The server-side instructor installs the rotor on the stator and conducts a trial run, which is viewed by the remote learner via internet video. Trial experiments demonstrate that the remote laboratory facilitates the learner's understanding of the variable reluctance stepping motor's mechanisms.
