Abstract

Interactive animations and graphics can help learners understand complex concepts and motivate learning. However, it is difficult and time-consuming to find proper tools and technologies to develop them. This is especially true when trying to illustrate atmospheric concepts such as temperature, vapor pressure, and crop evapotranspiration in a visually stimulating manner reflecting real-time conditions. This paper introduces how we use Macromedia Flash, Java Graphics, and XML to develop component library to support an USDA funded Agricultural Telecommunications project. Strategically placed instruments in field/targets collect real-time weather and crop data. This data is used to build a highly visual, modular and robust interactive educational environment. The project is intended to benefit the agricultural community by making available research findings. The modules built in the project are incorporated in undergraduate and graduate courses offered by the University of Nebraska.
