Abstract

This brief paper presents a survey of the literature and discussion of critical issues related to the use of computer mediated communication tools in online learning in teacher education. Synchronous and asynchronous tools commonly used in online learning environments will be examined along with a review of newer technologies that may allow learners to take a more active role in online learning. Technologies described include e-mail, listserv, discussion boards, blogs, audio and video web-based conferencing, instant messaging, chat and other computer mediated communication tools with potential application for learning.
