Abstract

In this poster an open learning environment to study tool use is presented. This open learning environment confronts learners with an ill-structured problem, a high amount of learner control and a number of tools that can help them in solving the problem. It was specifically developed to study the use of tools since research indicates that students do not always (adequately) use tools. In the experimental condition, a pedagogical agent is added to the program. This agent is expected to provide metacognitive advice to encourage the adequate use of tools.
