Abstract

Communities of research, practice and policy-making in the governance and international development sector are widely distributed in Canada, and have uneven access to information and knowledge. This context ultimately influences their effective participation, reflection and evidence-based decision-making. This paper reports on a project to overcome these limitations. The goal of this paper is two-fold: first it outlines the methodology employed to assess the demand for and design of a DCoP. We began with the use of a participatory design approach [PDA] in assessing participants' needs, and in doing so we identified appropriate technologies to support a community whose members are diverse and geographically distributed. Further, we iteratively used PDA in our research and show how we continuously strive to support a community to evolve, using blended strategies [face-to-face meetings, and information communication technologies].
