Abstract

In order to evaluate quality of online discourse when using either coursed-based online discussion tools (e.g., discussion boards, chat) or similar tools ancillary to the course (e.g., wikis, skype, mobile device applications) different frameworks are used to evaluate quality of discussions. A framework is a grading rubric that allows the reader to score the discussion (i.e. interactivity patterns, strength of an argument). Spatariu et al. (2004) classified and described a number of such frameworks that were placed in four categories based on the constructs that are purportedly measured by the instructors. These categories were levels of disagreement, argument structure analysis, interaction based, and content analysis. These frameworks r provide a foundation for researchers and practitioners interested in a systematic and purposeful way of evaluating the quality of course discussion as it relates to course objective or goals. The current review follows-up on the frameworks presented in Spatariu, Hartley, & Bendixen (2004); and explores new frameworks; in addition to discussing methodological considerations and suggestions for future use. First, we rview Spatariu et al. (2004) findings to suggest a theoretical discourse model; and then review subsequent frameworks. Second, we review new frameworks that pertain to evaluation of argumentation, interaction, content, and qualitative analysis. Lastly, we will discuss conclusions and recommendations for future research and practice for discourse in both post-secondary and K-12 instruction.
