Abstract

A human-centred approach to the use and development of computerised information systems (IS) is needed to complement the prevalent technocentric way of designing and utilising the applications of IS. The human-centred approach emphasises the need to understand the computer and the human being as an entity the design of which should be based on knowledge of human behaviour both during the development and the use of IS. This paper describes two interrelated studies in which the human-centred idea is concretised by examined the nature of university students' argumentative e-mail discussions, and the IS designers' conceptions of the human being in the context of information systems development.
