Usability Testing: A Key Component in e-Learning Design

Abstract
Although common practice among web developers, usability testing is largely overlooked as a component of the development process for e-learning courses. As a training organization that has created scores of e-learning courses for diverse audiences, we have learned that testing new designs and approaches is critical in ensuring the success of your project. This session will demonstrate the importance of conducting usability tests to gather concrete evidence about how the target audience will experience your course. We will show examples of tests we have conducted, discuss when testing should occur in the development process, and walk through the design of an easy-to-conduct, low-cost test. Finally, we will show “before” and “after” screens, to demonstrate the impact of test results on course design.
