Abstract

Evaluating educational software to build graduate competency and a residency portfolio opportunity led to the discovery of a way to incorporate simulation software into current teaching practice with nursing students using Virtual Clinical Excursions (VCE 3.0). VCE 3.0 is software developed by Elsevier for medical-surgical nursing textbooks to promote active learning. Benefits of the software are it replicates reality of clinical practice and provides objective feedback regarding student interventions. Problems include 6 hours of student time to complete a simulation. Use of VCE 3.0 is inline with nursing literature calling for objective clinical practice evaluation. Learning to evaluate educational software provided the opportunity to determine the existence and benefit of gaming/simulation software appropriate for use in nursing education and the opportunity to offer practical teaching experience using the software with peers through presentation, a necessary component of the Residency Portfolio.
