Abstract
The benefits of online group work in the asynchronous computer mediated communication (CMC) environment are documented. Likewise, recent research has begun to examine the benefits of online group work in the synchronous CMC environment as well, with a focus on the comparison between asynchronous and synchronous communication media. This showcase will provide an overview and synthesis of recent research that examines synchronous and asynchronous CMC technologies on students’ learning and community and provides implications for distance learning course design and implementation.
