Abstract
Abstract: Online dialogue plays a significant role in helping faculty and students with various learning tasks. The type of interaction and student cognitive involvement in the online dialogue, and the process through which new understanding is generated remains unclear. Instructors still find it hard to aid and facilitate student learning in online discussions. This article analyzes types of interaction in online discussions, examines the interpersonal relationship in each type, and explores effects on and implications for learning and teaching in higher education. By combining social network analysis with qualitative content analysis, the article explores new methodologies for analyzing participation, learning, and interaction taken place in the electronic forum.
