Abstract
NEARStar (the Network for English Acquisition and Reading Star Schools Program) provides a supplementary, online, multimedia early reading curriculum for ESL students. NEARStar provides research-based instruction, embedded assessments, and professional development resources - over the Web. Students interact with animated learning activities, online storybooks, catchy chants, and arcade-like games. This presentation demonstrates a state-of-the-art, multimedia, interactive, Web-delivered intervention that uses Flash 6 and Action Script with XML and ASP to link front end delivery with backend databases. Independent evaluation of NEARStar's first implementation will also be presented. NEARStar is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Star Schools program and meets federal criteria for research- and standards-based instruction.
