This article describes the process of forming a non-profit Manufacturing Education Program to create Web-based training curriculum and materials to help students prepare for Machining Level One certification under the standards of the National Institute of Machining Skills. The point is made that reviews of the literature fail to fully prepare developers for the full complexity of such a task, and the aspects of the project which became evident only after plunging fully into the midst of implementation are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the necessity of ensuring diverse and cross-disciplinary competencies on the part of the development team.
