Abstract

With the rapid technological advances, researchers have recognized the advantages of using virtual worlds for teaching and learning foreign languages (Deutschmann et al, 2009; Liou et al., 2011; Wang et al., 2009; Zheng et al., 2009). Following this trend, the presenters will demonstrate an instructional model of trans-national collaborative English learning in a virtual world, Second Life. In the model, students have opportunities to work within a language learning community consisting of peoples from different countries (e.g., Korea and Taiwan). The demonstration will focus on the use of Second Life as a platform for trans-national language learning virtual community. During the demonstration, the presenters will offer specific examples of how to structure a virtual language learning community and promote positive interdependence within a community. Lastly, they will provide possible communicative activities that can be implemented in a virtual world as well as computer-supported collaborative activities for virtual language learning community.
