
Digital Delight or Digital Doldrum: A Study of Graphical Representation in Digital Science Textbooks

Abstract
Advances in publishing and delivery of text materials for instruction have dramatically changed how we view the old stand-by textbook. This study investigates new digital materials adopted by the state of Texas for the teaching of physics for the integration of text and graphical representations. The Graphical Analysis Protocol (GAP) (Slough, McTigue, Kim, & Jennings, 2010) was modified to accommodate more interactive graphical elements (e.g., simulations, image maps, animations, videos, etc.). Analysis indicates that the digital materials reviewed range greatly in their use of graphical elements from an electronic text that contains nothing more than PDF files of the publisher’s currently adopted traditional text to a unique product that is part text and part software. All e-resources incorporated at least some element of the more interactive graphical representations, but some have features that make them fall short of providing a pedagogically sound alternative to the traditional textbook.
