Abstract

This paper reports the design of a story authoring program, MyStory, where 3–6 year old children create stories on a computer by arranging photos and recording audio expressions for each selected photo. For use in preschool classrooms, the development process for this story-authoring program includes three stages of information collection and analysis: requirement gathering, iterative program design and user feedback analysis. MyStory incorporates two distinct user interfaces to address the needs of children and teachers respectively. The children’s user interface is designed to provide young learners with supports by reducing complexities of the tasks. The teachers’ user interface allows them to manage the children’s works and import digital photos that would enhance a child’s imagination. MyStory earned high marks from preschool teachers. In the field, young children also enjoyed the use of MyStory.
