Abstract

This paper is a report on the development and creation of The Collector, a tool for elementary students to collect data “in the field” using the latest mobile technology. Current pedagogical thinking argues that using data improves depth of understanding and retention of science concepts. Unfortunately traditional methods of data collection, especially for younger children can be cumbersome and students often lose focus of the learning goals in the “collection” process. New mobile technologies hold great potential to streamline data collection and organization thus enabling students to more quickly and effectively center their attention on the learning goal of data analysis. The Collector was developed and designed for elementary students to enhance their data collection, organization, and interpretation skills. The program runs on mobile devices affording real-world applications and learning experiences.
