Virtual worlds as educational platforms have gained some currency in higher education. Traditional applications usually include developing models that reflect some component of external reality, and then allowing students to use this model to create and manipulate communities. Usually, the anticipated learning outcomes have little to do with the underlying platform, and instead are based on the content component. In situations that map partially onto the underlying technology platform, learning can become more recursive and self-referential. Stacking outcomes with process in this way presents a much more optimized pedagogy. Our presentation will explore techniques developed over several years of emerging technology classroom experience for research and projects. We will provide exemplars and methodologies used in three classes: Advanced Technical Writing, Culmination Project, and Interdisciplinary Team Projects. We will conclude with recommendations for effective instructional design strategies, which can be applied to other courses.
