Abstract

This paper reviews the motivations of adult wikis users in three settings - Wikipedia, higher education classrooms, and work environments. Given the attention to the success of the Wikipedia project, we exam the differences and similarities regarding the motivations and the barriers on wiki projects in these three settings. The researchers argue that the understanding of the adult learners’ motivations is necessary in order to engage users in collaborative tasks on wikis. This paper also suggests the need to revisit or redesign strategies for motivating wikis users’ behaviors in the higher education classrooms and in the work environments.
