Abstract

Global Lab is an online, telecollborative science project that today engages middle-school students in shared Earth and environmental science investigations. It was developed and piloted in the mid-1990s, and it pioneered cloud services and social networking well before either term had even been coined. It engaged students in true learning communities of practice, enabling them to meet, interact, and conduct online scientific investigations using shared resources and protocols. While the project was unable sustain its promise in the days of dial-up modem access, clunky computers, and no Web pages, it has been successfully relaunched in Russia. Today, Global Lab is taking advantage of modern digital technologies and networking, and has begun to realize the potential of cloud services for K-12 education. Going forward, the project will expand to a global community and will further innovate cloud pedagogy and social networking for effective science learning.
