Abstract

Adapting social networking and Web 2.0 technologies to e-learning provides opportunities for peers to support each other in the learning process. Drawing on a socio-constructivist framework, the study examined peer communications in an online course featuring synchronous and asynchronous forums. Synchronous chat gave learners a forum to post quick, short questions and observations, which served as a community-building framework. Asynchronous discussion elicited more reflective and detailed posts, some providing detailed questions and responses, which served as a knowledge-building resource.
