Abstract

A latest evolution of the Web, Web 2.0, provides opportunities for interactive participation and social activities. The purpose of this study is to examine whether students’ usage of Web 2.0 and their social presence affect participation and activities in an online discussion forum. The discussion forum was open for three months at one of virtual universities in Korea. This study reveals that the usage of Web 2.0 and social presence does not affect the participation in the discussion forum. Using social network analysis, two groups emerged; the core who actively participated and the peripheral group. Web 2.0 usages were significantly different between the two groups, but social presence showed no difference. In the content analysis, the core group posted more social messages than peripheral group. In conclusion, active Web 2.0 users lead the online discussion, though Web 2.0 does not relate to participation in the discussion forum.
