Abstract

To meet the ever-growing need for special educators across cultures, the current project was funded by the Global Challenge Initiative at the University of North Texas (UNT). UNT seeks to provide four "globally enhanced" on-line courses for prospective teachers in special education. The courses include: EDSP 5710 Special Education Programs and Practices (Introductory level course), EDSP 5510 Appraisal of Exceptional Learners, EDSP 5560 Assistive Technology, and EDSP 5321 Authentic Assessment. The courses will provide: lectures in Spanish as well as English, units on cultural awareness, video examples of best practices across cultures, and examples of English language learners in a simulated classroom (simSchool). For this project, UNT has partnered with Casa Grande Universidad in Ecuador. We anticipate that the four courses we develop for use with Casa Grande can be used in many Spanish speaking countries. Plans are in place to document the effectiveness of this collaborative initiative.
