Abstract

Abstract: This paper examines the impact of professional development on teacher instruction in an urban middle school. A descriptive approach was used to identify the professional development practices that supported teachers' use of technology in facilitating instructional change. The study also examined the technology capabilities that facilitated changes in teachers' classroom practices, and the changes teachers made in their instruction while using technology. Findings indicate that reform-professional development strategies, teacher interest in student learning and effective instruction, and teachers' willingness to implement new instructional approaches supported instructional change. Technology's digital and spatial elements appear to support new conceptions of instructional space, and the development of new instructional routines and schemas.
