Digital Storytelling Across Cultures and Throughout History: From Awareness to Action in Teacher Education

Teacher candidates deconstructed and assessed the national and local social studies curriculum and standards; interviewed k-12 educators; and documented their stories in order to articulate the realities of conditions in schools through their research, analysis, and dialog. This presentation offers creative strategies and unique possibilities for integrating new media technologies into the curriculum; outlines results of participatory research based on producing media in classrooms with limited resources; provides participants' reflections toward the power of media in defining diversity; and showcase their projects. It will focus on celebrating stories that our teacher educators developed for honoring their communities and for bringing stories and struggles from teacher education through the process of producing oral history projects and video documentaries.
