Abstract

Virtual schooling, or the practice of offering K-12 courses via distance technologies, has rapidly increased in popularity since its beginning in 1994. A key component in the success of VS teaching and learning is the extent to which teacher education programs can foster the development of future educators who can become effective VS facilitators, teachers, and designers. This paper describes the work of a national project Teacher Education Goes Into Virtual Schooling (TEGIVS) in each of four participating universities' teacher preparation programs and provides an update of progress. After a brief review of project goals, the description focuses on the creation and formative evaluation of tools and curriculum materials through which the project will introduce preservice teachers to virtual schooling. Also included are the revisions of the tools and the curriculum after these initial uses and recommendations for further research and development.
