Abstract

Recent federal legislation has impacted preparation of highly qualified special education teachers in higher education. Special education preparation must focus not only on course content and pedagogy, but also on technology in accordance with national standards. Teachers must be trained to use technology with students. They must also be knowledgeable of assistive technology's availability and its usefulness for students with special needs. Yet research indicates that both special and general education teachers lack an awareness of both the availability and effective uses of assistive technology. Based on a review of published literature, this paper presents a three-stage plan to integrate increasingly complex elements of technology at each level of pre-service special education training.
