Abstract

This paper discusses the use of technology as a medium for problem formulating in elementary mathematics. It is motivated by the authors' work with elementary pre-service teachers. The paper includes ideas, both practical and theoretical, related to the joint use of computational and manipulative features of an electronic spreadsheet in the context of K-4 mathematics. The notion of numerical and contextual coherency in problem formulating is introduced and used as a tool in analyzing problems posed by a pre-teacher.
