Abstract

This presentation will summarize a body of research centering on the measurement of sense of community within online classrooms as well as face to face classroom environments in a variety of higher education settings. The results of the research to be presented will compare the instructors' perception of classroom community with their students' measured sense of community. Students' assessment of their perceived learning will also be reported. The authors' research compares sense of community between students and their instructors in three types of institutions of higher education: public university, independent Christian university and public community college. The presentation will provide the initial findings of this research and its focus will be on possible implications for higher education instructors who teach either online or conventionally.
