Abstract
Computer-based assessment in second language learning processes is on an upward trend due to constant technological advances, with new applications and secure and reliable platforms, as well as improved access to these technologies. We consider that the multimedia item is key in this type of assessment and must be part of the features of any application focused on this activity. The issue that we detected arises from the way in which multimedia items are integrated, mainly the audio items in Listening tests, since in most cases candidates are allowed to control the multimedia object, which can be played, paused, fast-forwarded or rewinded freely. In our view, this has a negative effect on the quality and reliability of the assessment tests, in addition to providing an unjustified advantage to users with greater computer skills. According to the experience acquired in our research, we believe that candidates should not be allowed to control multimedia objects. As a result, the MYEXAMS software, developed during our research study to carry out assessment tests, incorporates strategies that make it possible to protect and control the use of these objects.
