Abstract

In this presentation, I will describe an innovative, flexible and efficient method for teaching business case studies across international boundaries. The primary goal of the project was to overcome the reluctance of students to invest the time and effort through extensive reading, that’s needed to effectively prepare for case studies workshops. I demonstrate how we bring alive a traditionally published case study into a game-like experience in an immersive, online, virtual world. Using design science research methodology we develop a prototype that enriches the traditional written case study turning it into an interactive online teaching and learning tool, engaging today’s digital native students. Achievement of the secondary objective of fostering teamwork and international student collaboration is demonstrated by the implementation of this prototype with groups of university students from two geographically separated locations, Western Australia and Switzerland. The strengths and weaknesses of this technique identified from qualitative and quantitative student feedback is detailed and the presentation concludes with ideas we propose for developing the next stage of this promising approach.
