Abstract

As the number of students of higher education enrolled in online courses continues to grow at a rapid rate, institutions of higher education must prepare their faculty for teaching in this medium in order to meet demand. This systematic review of the literature examined online professional development programs for online teaching in higher education in order to determine how such development is being reported in the literature and to gain a better understanding of the 9structure of such programs. Study findings demonstrate that few programs are reported in the literature, but those that are vary in length and content, yet still report consistencies in the increase in self-efficacy among faculty. Further, all programs note the importance of an authentic experience in faculty professional development for online instruction.
