Social media, as a digital body of various computer-mediated Web 2.0 communication tools, has proved to be a promising context for English language learners in the current digital age. Utilizing social media to enhance the quality of language learning is critical for two main reasons. First is the advent of new technologies that have made it possible for individuals to socialize beyond real time and place boundaries and make meaningful use of their target language. Second is the emergence of the new generation of language learners who cannot lead a normal life without accessing one or more types of social media. This generation has developed idiosyncratic learning habits that cannot be addressed effectively by traditional education settings and approaches. Thus, learning more about the nature of social media and its affordances for English language learners seems to be of great importance for both language educators and policy makers.
