Abstract

This paper proposes a mixed-method case study to analyze students’ online social learning in a Ning-based online course. The author firstly presents the conceptions of online social learning and online learning community. Secondly, relevant researches of how educators employ several traditional and emerging SNSs to build online learning communities are presented. And the advantages and disadvantages of different SNSs are discussed. Finally, according to the original CoI framework, the tentative reconceptualization of the CoI framework and relevant research methods, the author designs a mixed-method case study to examine the existence of four forms of presences (TP, SP, CP, and LP) and the relationships between and among them during students’ online social learning process. And another purpose of this study is to understand students’ behaviors and perceptions of using Ning as an online learning environment for a completely online course.
