A quantitative research study measuring the effects of use of a virtual writing lab on improvement of student writing skills at University of Phoenix

This exploratory study was conducted to measure the improvement of writing skills in students who used the tutorial device of a fully web based virtual writing lab. Students were asked to take a pre and post American College Testing (ACT) writing skills test and to submit their course assigned papers to the writing lab to be evaluated using a rubric designed to mirror the ACT evaluation. The study spanned a 15-week period, culminating with 20 students. The data were evaluated using an unpaired-samples t test and produced results considered not quite statistically significant at the .05 level due to small sample size. An end of study survey was conducted to obtain qualitative data regarding student perceptions of their improvement and its impact on their continuing education. Results indicated positive attitudes toward use of the writing lab and continued enrollment.
