The purpose of this study was to determine whether integrating technology into the course CO 4813/6813, Public Relations in Organizations, offered by the Department of Communication at Mississippi State University for both undergraduate and graduate students was effective in improving communication and technological skills of the enrolled students.
A case study design was used to conduct this research. A qualitative study was conducted in which the students during the Fall 1999 semester would provide the background information used to modify CO 4813/6813 for the Spring 2000 semester. This study included conducting interviews, performing observations, and analyzing documents of the enrolled students as well as students, comments and course evaluations from previous semesters. Multiple sources of data were collected, and an interview protocol was followed to increase validity and reliability.
Two research questions were addressed: (1) How can technology be integrated into the course CO 4813/6813, Public Relations in organizations? (2) Does the integration of technology increase the communication and technological skills as indicated by comments on course/faculty evaluations and in interviews?
The findings indicated very clearly that technology integration was a motivator for students. Results of the study indicated time, availability of hardware and software, instructional tactics, and computer training influenced the integration of technology into the course CO 4813/6813, Public Relations in organizations.
The participants enjoyed working on the new assignments and the challenges they presented. The participants believed that the integration of and training in electronic presentation and Web design increased their communication and technological skills. The participants deemed themselves as being more technical since they have new skills which they lacked at the beginning of the semester.
