Abstract

Through the metaphor of "throwing a party", we will provide a framework for understanding the building of an online community (Kaplan, 2002), provide models and tools for community-building, and share diverse examples that exemplify potential best practices for fostering virtual learning communities. Our presentation will focus on an online community for teachers of math and science (K-8) operated by Rider University, SELECT-VLC (Science Education and Literacy Center - Virtual Learning Community). This session will also introduce participants to iCohere (http://www.icohere.com), the highly adaptable, scalable, easy-to-implement, web-based collaborative community platform chosen to power SELECT-VLC. The flexibility of iCohere makes it a first-rate tool for business, education and health care.
