Depressive disorders are a significant problem for many adults and have been linked to poor occupational, interpersonal, and social functioning (Stewart, Ricci, Chee, Hahn, & Morganstein, 2005; NIHM, 2004). According to a recent report, at any given time, 6.6% of the U.S. population is actively experiencing a depressive disorder (Kessler et al., 2003). Perhaps even more disturbing is the fact that although depression affects so many adults, the majority go undiagnosed and untreated.
Primary care providers are often the first health care professionals to encounter adults with symptoms of a depressive disorder. As the “gate keepers” for depression, PCPs have the opportunity to recognize, diagnose, and effectively treat the symptoms. Traditional psychoeducational methods (i.e. patient brochures) are static and do little to engage patients. Evidence suggests the need for new interventions that can not only provide individuals with information about depressive disorders but will serve to motivate them to seek effective mental health treatment.
This dissertation proposes the creation of a program that will go one step beyond existing methods of psychoeducation about depressive disorders. “Knowledge and Action: A Resource for Depression” is a DVD-based psychoeducational program for adults diagnosed with a depressive disorder by their primary care provider. It is designed to inform individuals of the nature of the disease, encourage them to make crucial lifestyle and attitude changes, and motivate them to seek out the appropriate psychological services to treat their depression. An informed theoretical basis and plan for program evaluation are included. The aim of this proposal is to create program that adults find both helpful and engaging. It is hypothesized that the resulting program will be more effective than existing psychoeducational interventions in disseminating information about depression and motivating adults to receive treatment.
