A case study of Web-based learning project: “Cyber Museum of Chinese Art”

This research investigated the effectiveness of Web-based technologies to assist students in learning. To test the hypothesis that Web-based technologies can be used to assist students learning, the researcher conducted a case study of eight students as they utilized World Wide Web in a course “Introduction to Chinese Culture” during the spring of 2001.
The data collecting techniques of this case study were a base-line census that included the students' demographic data and their previous experiences in Web-based technologies and in learning Chinese art, weekly assignments, participant observation, and two stage interviews. For example, the participants' background data were collected, each participant's participation was observed and recorded, and three weekly assignments were collected and analyzed.
Participating students were also pre-tested to determine their knowledge of Chinese art and their ability for utilize the Internet. They were interviewed during the course to determine their experience in using three selected Web-based technologies, an additional interview after the course was conducted to determine how subjects used these technologies to enhance their own learning.
According to the findings of this study, it is clear that Web-based technologies could be used to increase participants' learning. It also suggests that an educator who is designing a Web-based learning project needs to be concerned with the functional relationships of Web-based technologies as applied to his/her curricular model.
