Considerations for online training in the petroleum services industry

This action research study examined the best way to delivery online training to meet the needs of bulk plant operators at Sanjel Corporation, a Canadian petroleum services company. This study prepared the foundation for implementing the company's first online training course while evolving its existing training structure. A review of literature on workplace learning, blended learning, repurposing instructional materials, informal learning, and change management grounded the research. Data was collected from 26 bulk plant operators using mixed methods, specifically focus group interviews and survey. This study found: (a) a dominance of informal learning in the workplace, (b) that participants have adequate computer skills for online learning, (c) that participants are self-directed learners, and (d) the absence of a formal training process for this specific job position. A key recommendation was to implement competency assessment with online instruction acting in support of structured on-the-job training.
