Abstract

This study investigated authentication and customization use at U.S. daily newspaper online sites and how these features related to revenue streams. The Web survey yielded 242 responses from online managers. The study found that the use of authentication varied widely, but registration, subscription, and pay-per-use all are growing rapidly. Larger newspaper sites favored registration while smaller sites favored subscription. Customization was not used widely, but was seen as a potential revenue stream that has not reached its height.
