Abstract

The Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education announced public access to its Digital Library. While currently the Digital Library allows free text searching, many information retrieval experts suggest that the use of a controlled vocabulary makes indexing and subsequent searching easier. A review of current controlled vocabularies revealed that there is no accepted ontology of terms in educational technology, the main emphasis of the work in the AACE, and that in most educational ontologies include educational technology at its lowest level of specification. This paper discusses the reasons for, and the current status of the development of a controlled vocabulary for the AACE Digital Library, and, hopefully, for the educational technology field.
