Abstract

Online learning community is the major trend for Web-learning with learner-centered paradigm. Reflecting on her experience in establishing online learning communities via action research, the author points out three challenges that online teachers may face: establishing intimacy connections, changing students' perception about online discussion and connecting external community with her community. Additionally, students' critical thinking and writing abilities are important to promote the quality of online learning community. It is also suggested that online learning environments should embed the following mechanisms to facilitate the operation of online learning communities: (1) connect content to community, (2) integrate knowledge management into learning processes, (3) develop self-regulation assessment systems, (4) build moderating and meta-moderating, and (5) offer powerful content analysis tools for analyzing qualitative learning data.
