Abstract

People have gathered in communities for centuries. Initially for protection, then socialization, these groups were rather small, focused on the villages of an agricultural society. In the Information Age, the focus shifts from physical communities to virtual ones, particularly educational communities. Yet many are ill-prepared to meet this new challenge. The modes of communication and social mores of the group are foreign, with both instructors and learners unsure of how to act in the new environment. While the potential exists for virtual communities of learners to extend education beyond the walls of the campus, both instructors and learners need assistance. This presentation will focus on instructional strategies for developing a virtual community of learners. Practical skills to facilitate both synchronous and asynchronous communication will be included. Perspectives from faculty members who have employed these techniques as well as the views of students will be presented.
