Abstract
Over the past two years we have been involved in the design, development and pilot of an online collaboration environment based on Multi-User Dimensions, Object-Oriented (MOO) and the WWW (Looi, 1998; 1999; 2000). Our work on designing technology environments and studying ways of using these environments supports collaborative learning approaches. In (Looi, 1999), we describe a framework for thinking about the roles of web-based multimedia- enhanced MOOs (called WOOs) in supporting different approaches to learning. The spatial metaphor in WOOs, object construction, manipulation and persistence, and support for real-time collaboration make it possible to provide virtual environments for instruction, construction, communication, and situated learning. Students can directly experience, manipulate, and create objects in their rich multimedia form. WOOs are augmented with synchronous multimedia collaboration technology that provides simultaneous control and viewing of shared documents and applications.
