MiWIT: Integrated ESL/EFL Text Analysis and Readability Tools for Content Creation in Microsoft Word

MiWIT (Microsoft Word Integrated Text Analysis Tools), provides a set of innovative text-analysis tools for second-language learning. These tools can free ESL/EFL teachers and content developers from the need to switch between discrete software packages and MS Word. According to “TAVI” (text as a vehicle for information) principles, teachers are able to rapidly determine: readability, difficulty level and classroom appropriateness of a text. The process: 1) type/paste text into MS Word; 2) analyze using MiWIT tools to check difficulty (length, lexis, word frequency, academic, technical vocabulary); 3) text is then emended. In typical MS Word such scenarios are cumbersome, especially when figures//images exist. MiWIT allows teachers to perform a series of operations for convenient content development. Two aspects of previously published research are here combined: program design and educational pedagogy, with the goal of further integrating CAI technology with classroom practice.
